It is also an important destination for visitors exploring the history and heritage of Th\u0103ng Long.<\/p>\n<h4 style=\"text-align: justify;\">A Strategic Location within the Imperial Citadel of Th\u0103ng Long<\/h4>\n<p class=\"isSelectedEnd\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">The Hanoi Flag Tower is located on \u0110i\u1ec7n Bi\u00ean Ph\u1ee7 Street, Ba \u0110\u00ecnh District, Hanoi. The structure was built in 1812, during the reign of Emperor Gia Long, on the southern side of the former Imperial Citadel of Th\u0103ng Long.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-1420 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/hoangthanhthanglong.vn\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/co-co-ha-noi-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"600\" \/><\/p>\n<p class=\"PDq2pG_selectionAnchorContainer\" style=\"text-align: justify;\" data-start=\"1229\" data-end=\"1601\">According to the historical layout of the citadel, the Flag Tower marks the southern end of the central axis, also known as the ceremonial axis, which runs through the heart of the Imperial Citadel. From the Flag Tower, this axis extends through \u0110oan M\u00f4n and continues to K\u00ednh Thi\u00ean Palace, the central and most important site of the former imperial court. Its strategic position demonstrates that the Flag Tower was not merely a military structure but also an important component of the overall architectural and spatial organization of the imperial citadel.<\/p>\n<h4 style=\"text-align: justify;\">The History of Hanoi Flag Tower<\/h4>\n<p class=\"isSelectedEnd\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">After the Nguy\u1ec5n Dynasty unified Vietnam and established its capital at Ph\u00fa Xu\u00e2n (Hu\u1ebf), Emperor Gia Long ordered the reconstruction of the Hanoi Citadel. The Hanoi Flag Tower was built in 1812 as part of the citadel&#8217;s military infrastructure, serving purposes related to observation, communication and signaling.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-1422 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/hoangthanhthanglong.vn\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/co-co-ha-noi-3.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"673\" \/><\/p>\n<p class=\"PDq2pG_selectionAnchorContainer\" style=\"text-align: justify;\" data-start=\"2165\" data-end=\"2345\">The tower was constructed on an area that had previously formed part of the Tam M\u00f4n, or Three-Gate structure, on the southern side of the Imperial Citadel during the L\u00ea period.\u00a0The Flag Tower was used to display the imperial flag and communicate important signals across the citadel.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\" data-start=\"2455\" data-end=\"2773\">One of the most remarkable aspects of its history is that, while many structures of the Hanoi Citadel were demolished in the late 19th century, the Hanoi Flag Tower was among the very few major structures to survive almost intact. It therefore remains an exceptionally valuable historical monument of Th\u0103ng Long\u2013Hanoi.<\/p>\n<h4 style=\"text-align: justify;\">The Unique Architecture of Hanoi Flag Tower<\/h4>\n<p class=\"PDq2pG_selectionAnchorContainer\" style=\"text-align: justify;\" data-start=\"2827\" data-end=\"2943\">The Hanoi Flag Tower is one of the finest surviving examples of early 19th-century military architecture in Vietnam.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\" data-start=\"2945\" data-end=\"3202\">The structure consists of three square-tiered platforms, a tall octagonal tower and an octagonal pavilion at the top. The main structure is approximately 33.4 meters high, while the total height reaches about 41.4 meters, including the flagpole.<\/p>\n<h4 style=\"text-align: justify;\">The Three Platforms<\/h4>\n<p class=\"PDq2pG_selectionAnchorContainer\" style=\"text-align: justify;\" data-start=\"3228\" data-end=\"3356\">The three platforms are built in the form of truncated square pyramids, each tier becoming progressively smaller toward the top.<\/p>\n<ul style=\"text-align: justify;\" data-start=\"3358\" data-end=\"3626\">\n<li data-start=\"3358\" data-end=\"3484\" data-section-id=\"moiaib\">First tier: approximately 42.5 meters on each side and 3.1 meters high, with two brick stairways leading upward.<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"3485\" data-end=\"3626\" data-section-id=\"1nb3tps\">Second tier: approximately 27 meters on each side and 3.7 meters high, with four entrances facing the four cardinal directions.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\" data-start=\"3628\" data-end=\"3704\">Three of these entrances bear Chinese inscriptions with auspicious meanings:<\/p>\n<ul style=\"text-align: justify;\" data-start=\"3706\" data-end=\"3910\">\n<li data-start=\"3706\" data-end=\"3783\" data-section-id=\"tekqyl\">Ngh\u00eanh H\u00fac\u00a0on the eastern side \u2013 \u201cWelcoming the morning sunlight.\u201d<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"3784\" data-end=\"3845\" data-section-id=\"1woohyb\">H\u1ed3i Quang\u00a0on the western side \u2013 \u201cReflected light.\u201d<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"3846\" data-end=\"3910\" data-section-id=\"1x7vywe\">H\u01b0\u1edbng Minh on the southern side \u2013 \u201cFacing the light.\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\" data-start=\"3912\" data-end=\"3955\">The northern entrance bears no inscription.<\/p>\n<ul data-start=\"3957\" data-end=\"4079\">\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\" data-start=\"3957\" data-end=\"4079\" data-section-id=\"ovokav\">Third tier: approximately 12.8 meters on each side and 5.1 meters high, providing access to the tower above.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h4 style=\"text-align: justify;\">The Tower and Octagonal Pavilion<\/h4>\n<p class=\"PDq2pG_selectionAnchorContainer\" style=\"text-align: justify;\" data-start=\"4123\" data-end=\"4253\">Rising from the third platform is the main tower, an 18.2-meter-high octagonal structure that gradually tapers toward the top.\u00a0Inside the tower is a spiral staircase with 54 steps, leading to the upper pavilion.\u00a0One of the tower&#8217;s most distinctive architectural features is its system of 39 fan-shaped openings. These openings provide both natural light and ventilation, allowing air to circulate throughout the tower.\u00a0At the top is an octagonal pavilion approximately 3.3 meters high, with eight windows corresponding to its eight sides.\u00a0At the center of the pavilion is a cylindrical structure that supports the flagpole. The flagpole itself is approximately 8 meters high.\u00a0Together, these architectural elements create the distinctive silhouette that has become one of the most recognizable landmarks of Hanoi.<\/p>\n<h4 style=\"text-align: justify;\">Remarkable Traditional Building Techniques<\/h4>\n<p class=\"PDq2pG_selectionAnchorContainer\" style=\"text-align: justify;\" data-start=\"5014\" data-end=\"5134\">One of the fascinating features of the Hanoi Flag Tower is the comfortable interior climate despite Hanoi&#8217;s hot summers. The design of the tower incorporates a sophisticated system of openings and ventilation passages that allows air to circulate naturally. From the top of the tower, soldiers could observe a vast area of Hanoi and its surrounding districts.\u00a0Despite wars and major changes to the urban landscape, the Flag Tower continued to stand, becoming a powerful symbol of the resilience of Hanoi.<\/p>\n<h4 style=\"text-align: justify;\">The Historic Flag-Raising Ceremony of October 10, 1954<\/h4>\n<p class=\"PDq2pG_selectionAnchorContainer\" style=\"text-align: justify;\" data-start=\"6394\" data-end=\"6547\">One of the most important historical events associated with the Hanoi Flag Tower took place on October 10, 1954, when Hanoi was officially liberated.\u00a0At exactly 3:00 p.m., the siren of the Hanoi Opera House sounded for a long time. The military band performed the National Anthem under the direction of musician \u0110inh Ng\u1ecdc Li\u00ean, while the red national flag with a yellow star was slowly raised to the top of the Hanoi Flag Tower.\u00a0It was the first time that the national flag of the Democratic Republic of Vietnam flew over the tower following the liberation of Hanoi.\u00a0That historic moment became one of the enduring symbols of peace, independence and the return of Hanoi to national sovereignty.\u00a0Since then, the national flag has continued to fly proudly above the tower, becoming an iconic image deeply associated with the capital.<\/p>\n<h4 style=\"text-align: justify;\">A Symbol of Hanoi and Vietnam<\/h4>\n<p class=\"PDq2pG_selectionAnchorContainer\" style=\"text-align: justify;\" data-start=\"7286\" data-end=\"7488\">Soon after the establishment of the Democratic Republic of Vietnam, an image of the <strong data-start=\"7370\" data-end=\"7390\">Hanoi Flag Tower<\/strong> was prominently featured on the country&#8217;s first banknotes issued by the National Bank of Vietnam.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\" data-start=\"7490\" data-end=\"7583\">This reflects the special symbolic significance of the monument in modern Vietnamese history.
