{"id":2703,"date":"2017-03-04T15:51:19","date_gmt":"2017-03-04T15:51:19","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/hoangthanhthanglong.vn\/en\/?p=2703"},"modified":"2023-05-26T09:51:54","modified_gmt":"2023-05-26T09:51:54","slug":"incense-offering-ceremony-on-the-135th-anniversary-of-the-passing-of-governor-hoang-dieu","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/hoangthanhthanglong.vn\/en\/incense-offering-ceremony-on-the-135th-anniversary-of-the-passing-of-governor-hoang-dieu\/","title":{"rendered":"Incense offering ceremony on the 135th anniversary of the passing of Governor Ho\u00e0ng Di\u1ec7u"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: justify\">On the morning of 4 March 2017, the Th\u0103ng Long &#8211; H\u00e0 N\u1ed9i Heritage Conservation Centre held an incense offering ceremony at B\u1eafc M\u00f4n (North Gate) in commemoration of the demise of Governor Ho\u00e0ng Di\u1ec7u.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">The ceremony was attended by Comrade Nguy\u1ec5n Xu\u00e2n Ph\u00fac \u2013 Member of the Politburo, Prime Minister of Vietnam, Comrade Nguy\u1ec5n \u0110\u1ee9c Chung \u2013 Chairman of the People\u2019s Committee of H\u00e0 N\u1ed9i, Comrade Ng\u00f4 Th\u1ecb Thanh H\u1eb1ng \u2013 Deputy Secretary of H\u00e0 N\u1ed9i Party Committee, representatives of the local authorities, army officers and members of mass organizations, the public as well as students from a local primary school named after the deceased Governor.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">Governor Ho\u00e0ng Di\u1ec7u, known by birth as Ho\u00e0ng Kim T\u00edch, style name Quang Vi\u1ec5n, courtesy name T\u0129nh Trai. He was born in 1829 to a family of renowned scholarly traditions in Xu\u00e2n \u0110\u00e0i Village, Di\u00ean Ph\u01b0\u1edbc, Qu\u1ea3ng Nam (now \u0110i\u1ec7n B\u00e0n District of Qu\u1ea3ng Nam).\u00a0 In 1848, Ho\u00e0ng Di\u1ec7u passed the provincial exam in Th\u1eeba Thi\u00ean for C\u1eed nh\u00e2n (literally \u2018Recommended Man\u2019) degree, together with his elder brother Ho\u00e0ng Kim Gi\u00e1m. In 1853, Ho\u00e0ng Di\u1ec7u sat for the metropolitan exam and became a Ph\u00f3 b\u1ea3ng (literally: doctoral runner-up). He assumed the following posts: inventory officer in Academy (1853), District Chief of Tuy Vi\u1ec5n (Tuy Ph\u01b0\u1edbc &#8211; B\u00ecnh \u0110\u1ecbnh) in 1854, District Chief of H\u01b0\u01a1ng Tr\u00e0 (Th\u1eeba Thi\u00ean Hu\u1ebf)\u00a0 in 1864. Between 1868 and 1876 he held respectively the following positions: Prefecture Chief of \u0110a Ph\u00fac (Ph\u00fac Y\u00ean), Prefecture Chief of L\u1ea1ng Giang (B\u1eafc Giang), Province Chief of Nam \u0110\u1ecbnh, Province Chief of B\u1eafc Ninh. In 1878, Ho\u00e0ng Di\u1ec7u returned to his native province of Qu\u1ea3ng Nam and was tasked with the rescue of people and repelling of bandits. Between 1878 and 1879, he served in the Ministry of Justice and Ministry of Home Affairs. During his life of officialdom, he was on some occasions demoted because of the wrongdoings of his inferiors without his knowledge. Later, the Royal Court, which realized that he was a talented man, with integrity and enthusiasm to boot, decided to restore his titles. In 1879, Ho\u00e0ng Di\u1ec7u was involved in diplomatic field, working as a Deputy Ambassador. He aided the Ambassador in trade agreement negotiations with Spain. It was also in this year that he was promoted to be Minister of Defence. In 1880, Ho\u00e0ng Di\u1ec7u became Governor of H\u00e0 Ninh, where he was to manage the most crucial region of Tonkin, which included H\u00e0 N\u1ed9i and its vicinity. He did his best to reinforce defence for the city and take care of its people. Today, next to \u00d4 quan Ch\u01b0\u1edfng City Gate, there still stands a stele inscribed in 1881 by Governor Ho\u00e0ng Di\u1ec7u and his associate Ho\u00e0ng H\u1eefu X\u1ee9ng which ordered officials not to cause troubles to the people during weddings or funerals, together with a set of other regulations that everybody had to abide by.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">When the French launched a second attack on H\u00e0 N\u1ed9i Citadel on 25\/4\/1882, Ho\u00e0ng Di\u1ec7u commanded his men to engage the enemy, bravely defending the citadel despite the prior surrender by the central court in Hu\u1ebf. However, because of a traitor who set fire to the ammunition inside the citadel which resulted in chaos, the French took advantage and climbed over the western city gate, pushed down the gate and stormed the citadel in large number.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">Right after the fall of H\u00e0 N\u1ed9i Citadel, Governor Ho\u00e0ng Di\u1ec7u retreated to the inner palace, prepared a memorial admitting responsibility to the court before using his turban to commit suicide at V\u00f5 Mi\u1ebfu, sending a message that he would rather die than surrender.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">On the watchtower of C\u1eeda B\u1eafc (North Gate) today, an altar has been set up to commemorate eternally two governors of H\u00e0 N\u1ed9i Nguy\u1ec5n Tri Ph\u01b0\u01a1ng and Ho\u00e0ng Di\u1ec7u, who sacrificed their lives for the people and the country:<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><em>\u201cLoyalty to the country, benevolence to the people &#8211; comparable to the Sun and the Moon<\/em><br \/>\n<em>Birth in the South, death in the North &#8211; intrepidity shines forever with the prosperity of the nation\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">The life of loyalty and benevolence led by the two governors Nguy\u1ec5n Tri Ph\u01b0\u01a1ng and Ho\u00e0ng Di\u1ec7u are likened to the sun and the moon. Although they were not born in Th\u0103ng Long, both sacrificed their lives for this land. Their integrity and intrepidity prevail forever with the country.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">The incense offering ceremony is a good chance for posterity to show their respect and reverence to the huge merits of the martyrs who dedicated their lives in defence of the city and the country.
