Not only was it the capital of the Au Lac State under An Duong Vuong around the 3rd century BCE and during the period of Ngo Quyen in the 10th century, Co Loa was also a political, military and cultural centre associated with many stages in the development of the nation\u2019s history. With its large-scale system of ramparts, unique construction techniques, interconnected network of moats, together with spaces for settlement, belief practices and community life that have been preserved and continued for more than two millennia, Co Loa is an exceptional heritage site reflecting the formation of the early state and the Red River civilization in Vietnam. These values are significant not only to national history but also provide an important basis for further research, cross-referencing and comparison with similar heritage sites in the region and around the world.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-14690\" src=\"https:\/\/hoangthanhthanglong.vn\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/coloa.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1366\" height=\"923\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">In implementation of the directives of the competent authorities on the preparation of the scientific dossier for the Co Loa Relic Site for submission to UNESCO for inscription on the World Heritage List, the City of Hanoi has progressively undertaken tasks to prepare the dossier. In accordance with the requirements of the World Heritage Convention, the preparation of a nomination dossier requires research, identification and the development of scientific arguments to clarify the Outstanding Universal Value (OUV) of the heritage property, based on convincing scientific evidence and subject to exchange and assessment by the national and international scientific community.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">With a view to further researching, discussing, identifying and clarifying the scientific arguments concerning the Outstanding Universal Value of the Co Loa Relic Site; providing a scientific basis for finalizing the Executive Summary for submission to UNESCO for consideration of the inclusion of the Co Loa Relic Site on the Tentative List for World Heritage nomination; and providing orientations for the research, conservation and promotion of heritage values in the new period, the Hanoi People\u2019s Committee and the Thang Long &#8211; Hanoi Heritage Conservation Centre, in coordination with the Vietnam Association of Historical Sciences and the University of Social Sciences and Humanities, organize the Scientific Conference \u201cIdentifying the Outstanding Universal Value of the Co Loa Relic Site\u201d.<\/p>\n<ul style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<li>Time: 08:00, August 12, 2026.<\/li>\n<li>Venue: Hall 19C, Thang Long &#8211; Hanoi Heritage Conservation Centre.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The Conference will be attended by leaders of the City of Hanoi; representatives of central ministries, agencies and sectors; the Vietnam National Commission for UNESCO; heritage management authorities; research institutes and universities; national experts and scholars; as well as representatives of local authorities and relevant organizations.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The Conference serves as an interdisciplinary scientific forum for the exchange, presentation and discussion of research findings on the Co Loa Relic Site from the perspectives of archaeology, history, geology, geomorphology, environment, planning, heritage conservation and related scientific disciplines. With reference to UNESCO criteria, the Conference will focus on discussing, reviewing and refining the body of scientific arguments for identifying the Outstanding Universal Value of the Co Loa Relic Site, with particular emphasis on the arguments under UNESCO criteria (iii) and (iv), thereby providing a foundation for the continued development of the World Heritage nomination dossier.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The Conference will open with a General Report on the principal contents of the Draft Executive Summary on the Co Loa Relic Site for submission to UNESCO, which presents preliminary scientific arguments concerning the Outstanding Universal Value of the Co Loa Relic Site, while identifying key issues for further discussion, review and refinement during the preparation of the World Heritage nomination dossier.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Session 1:<\/strong> \u201cCo Loa &#8211; A Centre for the Convergence and Diffusion of the Red River Civilization\u201d will focus on the natural, geomorphological and hydrological conditions that contributed to the formation of the Co Loa capital; the role of An Duong Vuong and the Au Lac State; achievements in archaeological research; and discussion of the continuity, authenticity and integrity of the archaeological remains, the system of representative artefacts, and the historical and cultural values of the Co Loa Relic Site.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Session 2:<\/strong> \u201cCo Loa Relic Site \u2013 Identifying Outstanding Universal Value\u201d will focus on discussing, reviewing and refining the body of scientific arguments concerning the Outstanding Universal Value of the Co Loa Relic Site; approaching the heritage property from a World Heritage perspective; clarifying its values in terms of planning, landscape organization, rampart construction techniques and the system of traditional festivals; while also discussing issues related to the preparation of the Executive Summary for submission to UNESCO and the conservation and promotion of heritage values in association with sustainable development.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Through scientific presentations and in-depth discussion sessions, the Conference aims to further research, discuss and refine the scientific arguments concerning the Outstanding Universal Value of the Co Loa Relic Site; supplement the scientific basis for finalizing the Executive Summary for submission to UNESCO for consideration of the inclusion of the Co Loa Relic Site on the Tentative List for World Heritage nomination; and propose orientations for research, conservation, management and the promotion of heritage values in accordance with the requirements of the World Heritage Convention.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The Conference also provides an opportunity to strengthen coordination among state management authorities, research institutions, universities, experts and the scientific community in the process of preparing the nomination dossier for the Co Loa Relic Site to become a World Heritage property; to contribute additional scientific evidence for further clarifying the values of the Co Loa Relic Site within regional and global historical and cultural contexts; and to lay the foundation for the sustainable conservation and promotion of the values of the Co Loa Relic Site in the future.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Co Loa holds a particularly important place in the history of nation-building and national defence of the Vietnamese people.
