Hanoi Flag Tower Opens to Visitors

The Thang Long – Hanoi Heritage Conservation Center has announced that starting January 1, 2025, visitors will be able to explore and photograph the Hanoi Flag Tower’s exterior and base. On New Year’s morning, many locals and tourists gathered to admire this historic monument. However, access is currently limited to the base and the surrounding area.

The Hanoi Flag Tower, also known as Kỳ Đài was constructed in the 19th century on the grounds of the Tam Mon Citadel from the Le Dynasty, located within the Imperial Citadel of Thang Long. For more than 200 years, the Flag Tower has stood as a “witness to history,” symbolizing the resilience and indomitable spirit of the people of Hanoi during the resistance against French colonial rule.

With its ancient architecture imbued with the passage of time, the Hanoi Flag Tower is located at 28A Dien Bien Phu Street, Ba Dinh District. Previously part of the Vietnam Military History Museum complex, the site was officially transferred to the management of the Thang Long – Hanoi Heritage Conservation Center on December 25, 2024.

The reopening plan was initiated following the handover from the Vietnam Military History Museum. However, certain internal sections and security systems within the Flag Tower require inspection, evaluation, and conservation. Additionally, some areas have deteriorated and need restoration to ensure safety for visitors. As a result, access to the interior remains temporarily closed. Visitors are currently encouraged to explore and take photos at the base and surrounding area of the Flag Tower. In the coming months, the Heritage Conservation Center will implement preservation measures, apply advanced technology to enhance management, and develop safe, engaging experiences for visitors.

Reopening the Hanoi Flag Tower provides the public with access to an important historical symbol and contributes to the recognition and preservation of Hanoi’s cultural heritage.

The Hanoi Flag Tower is not only a historic landmark but also a place where present and future generations can gain a deeper understanding of Vietnam’s rich cultural and traditional values. Visitors will have the chance to explore one of the most iconic heritage sites in the capital, a monument that embodies the heroic spirit of the nation.
