Vietnam and Philippine Presidents Explore Thang Long Citadel’s Rich Heritage During State Visit
During his state visit to Vietnam, the President of the Philippines Ferdinand Marcos Jr., together with President Vo Van Thuong, paid a visit to the World Heritage site of Thang Long Imperial Citadel in Hanoi on the afternoon of January 30, 2024.
The leaders of both countries immersed themselves in the festive atmosphere of the Vietnamese New Year (Tet) and explored the distinctive architectural works and valuable treasures preserved at this heritage site. During the visit, the Philippine President learned about the site’s history, the monarchies that ruled the country, and the historical ups and downs that have taken place on this land. In particular, information about the archaeological research and excavation process, and the conservation and restoration work at the Thang Long Imperial Citadel impressed Mr. Ferdinand Marcos Jr. the most, showcasing Vietnam’s efforts in preserving and enhancing the value of its heritage.
This visit by President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. to the Thang Long Imperial Citadel is not only an honor and a source of pride for the heritage site but also creates an important opportunity to promote understanding and cooperation between the two countries. This is a significant step in building a more closely-knit and cooperative relationship between the Philippines and Vietnam.
The Imperial Citadel of Thang Long is a vital cultural heritage of Vietnam, recognized as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 2010. It symbolizes the historical and cultural essence of the nation, representing the prosperity and power of the Ly, Tran, and Le dynasties. Upon his arrival at this site, President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. was warmly welcomed by President Vo Van Thuong, along with other Central and Hanoi city officials, as well as numerous researchers and heritage experts from the Thang Long – Hanoi Heritage Conservation Centre.
