Bac Giang – Shining memory
In the evening 6th October in Bac Giang a ceremony was solemnly held to receive UNESCO’s World Documentary Heritage certificate for the Buddhist woodblocks of Vinh Nghiem Pagoda as the World Documentary Heritage, Yen The insurrection location as special national relic, 16 communes in Hiep Hoa district as Safe zone II.
UNESCO’s Chief Representative in Vietnam, Katherine Muller Marin, handed over Certificate recognizing Buddhist woodblocks of Vinh Nghiem Pagoda as the World Documentary Heritage of Asia – Pacific.
Participated in the ceremony are the Former General Secretary Le Kha Phieu; Member of Politburo, Vice Chairman of NA Tong Thi Phong; Member of Politburo, Head of Organization Department of Central Committee To Huy Rua; Member of Politburo, Secretary of HCMC’s Party Committee Le Thanh Hai; Deputy Prime Minister Nguyen Thien Nhan; Former Chairman of Central Committee of Vietnamese Fatherland Front Pham The Duyet; UNESCO’s Chief Representative of Vietnam, Ms. Katherine Muller Marin.
On behalf of the Prime Minister to congratulate people of the ethnic groups in Bac Giang, the Deputy Prime Minister Nguyen Thien Nhan emphasized the recognition of three relics has confirmed the historical and cultural tradition of this area.
The fact that woodblock of Vinh Nghiem pagoda in Tri Yen commune, Yen Dung district recognized by UNESCO as the World’s documentary heritage of Asia – Pacific once again confirmed Vinh Nghiem Pagoda’s position and cultural value in the region and the world, one of the most ancient Buddhism training center of Vietnam.
Vice Chairwoman of NA, Tong Thi Phong presented to Bac Giang authorities the Certificate recognizing special relic to Yen The insurrection site.
The recognition of Yen The insurrection sites as national special relic, recognizing 16 communes in Hiep Hoa district as Safe zone II has confirmed position and historical and cultural value of Yen The insurrection, great contributions and sacrifice by the people of 16 communes in Hiep Hoa district, contributing their part to the victory of August Revolution in 1945.
The Deputy PM stressed this is also the deep gratefulness expressed by Party, Government and present generations to our forefathers, demonstrating our nation’s moral philosophy that when drinking, think of its source.

Deputy PM Nguyen Thien Nhan ask and encourage, in the coming time, the Party committee, local government and people of the ethnic groups in Bac Giang province to continue their solidarity, self-motivated, creation, effective exploitation of the advantages and potentialities in respect of human, land, revolutionary and cultural tradition, including the relics recognized today, facilitating Bac Giang to develop quicker, more comprehensive and stronger.
On occasion of these significant and special events, Bac Giang authorities also organized the 8th Festival of Culture, Sports and Culture of Bac Giang Ethnic Groups with a view to well preserving and bringing these cultural relics into full play, enhancing material and spiritual life of the local people and celebrating 117 years of its establishment (10/10/1895-10/10/2012).
After beating the drum to open the Festival by the Deputy PM Nguyen Thien Nhan, the Arts performance program with the theme “Bac Giang – Shining memory” took place with the participation of hundreds of artists, demonstrating the period of 30 years against French colonialists by Yen The insurgent army; demonstrating the revolutionary mobilization in Bac Giang, establishment of Safe zone II in 1938 and acknowledged the value of Vinh Nghiem pagoda’s woodblock heritage.

Vinh Nghiem pagoda’s woodblockVinh Nghiem pagoda in Duc La, Tri Yen, Yen Dung district was established in Ly dynasty and further developed in Tran dynasty (13th century). The pagoda is known as the original place of Truc Lam Zen Buddhism founded by King Tran Nhan Tong. The pagoda has stored more than 3,000 woodblocks, each of which is an art sculpture work, in addition to Buddhist tenets, these woodblocks have great value in human life philosophy, history, science, culture and education… The collection of woodblocks of Vinh Nghiem pagoda recognized and honored by UNESCO as the World’s documentary heritage in Asia-Pacific with its unique and precious value and significance.
Yen The special national relic The insurrection of Yen The farmers for the period from 1884 to 1913 is the highest scale and longest one among the insurrections against domination by French colonialists before having the direction by the Communist Party of Vietnam. Over the past 100 years, the historical vestiges and locations which have been being preserved relating to insurrection rose up by Yen The farmers include the bastions, exhibits, valuable documents. The PM has made decision to recognize Yen The insurrection site as special national relic. Hiep Hoa Safe Zone II Under the leadership of the Party, people of Hoang Van commune as well as surrounding areas of Hiep Hoa district have been loyal to the Party to fight the enemy, protected and provided for the soldiers, secured the nerve-centers and the first revolutionists of the Central committee and Northern regional party committee during the secret period before August Revolution in 1945. People of 16 communes within Safe Zone II have played a very important role, contributing their part to the victory of August Revolution. The PM has made decision to recognize 16 communes in Hiep Hoa district as Safe Zone II of the Central committee of the Party. |
