The incense offering ceremony to commemorate the 140th anniversary of the death of Governor-general Hoang Dieu
In the morning of April 8th, 2022 (March 8 of the Water Tiger year) an incense offering ceremony was held by Thang Long-Hanoi Heritage Conservation Center to commemorate the 140th anniversary of the death of Governor-general Hoang Dieu at Northern Gate relic (inside the Imperial Citadel of Thang Long).
Attending the incense offering ceremony were President Nguyen Xuan Phuc; leaders of the Party Committee of Hanoi, Hanoi People’s Council and Hanoi People’s Committee; representatives of local authorities, officers, military soldiers, armed forces and mass organizations; representatives of family and hometown of Quang Nam, teachers and students of Hoang Dieu – Victoria School (Hanoi) and local and international visitors.
Governor-general Hoang Dieu was born as Hoang Kim Tich, courtesy name Quang Vien. He was born on February 10 of Earth Rat year (1829) into a family with Confucian tradition in Xuan Dai village (Dien Phuoc, Quang Nam).
From 1879 to 1882, he was Governor-general of Ha Ninh, managing the most important part of Northern Vietnam, which were Hanoi and its surrounding areas. He led Hanoi’s army and people to fight against the French Army despite the Hue court’s acceptance to surrender. On April 25th, 1882 (March 8th of the Water Horse year), the Citadel of Hanoi fell, and Hoang Dieu committed suicide in Vo Mieu to show his loyalty to the country and the people.
The incense offering ceremony was an opportunity for later generations to pay their respects to and to commemorate the tremendous contribution of martyrs who fought, sacrificed, guarded the citadel of Hanoi and protected the country; and contribute to the education of tradition to younger generations as well.
