Visit of Their Majesties the King and Queen of the Belgians to the Imperial Citadel of Thang Long: A Symbol of Friendship

At noon on 1 April 2025, as part of their State visit to Vietnam, His Majesty King Philippe and Her Majesty Queen Mathilde of the Kingdom of Belgium, accompanied by H.E. Mr. Luong Cuong, President of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam, and Madame Nguyen Thi Minh Nguyet, First Lady of Vietnam, visited the World Heritage site of the Imperial Citadel of Thang Long in Hanoi. This visit not only demonstrated the Belgian Royal Family’s appreciation for Vietnam’s cultural heritage but also marked a significant step forward in the development of friendly relations between the two nations.

At the Imperial Citadel of Thang Long, President Luong Cuong and the First Lady joined Their Majesties in a walk through Doan Mon Gate, a historic architectural structure of major importance. Built during the Ly Dynasty, Doan Mon features a U-shaped layout with five arched gates, the central one historically reserved for the king. It was the site of many important royal ceremonies. The delegation then visited the Archaeological Site and the stone dragon steps of Kinh Thien Palace, which preserve vital historical traces of the Citadel throughout successive dynasties. The artifacts unearthed here vividly reflect the rise and transformation of the ancient capital of Thang Long, from the Dai La period through the Ly, Tran, and Le dynasties.

Their Majesties also toured the exhibition “A Thousand Years of Thang Long from the Depths of the Earth”, which showcases many priceless artifacts recognized as National Treasures. Among the most notable are precious metal objects and high-quality ceramics produced by royal kilns in Thang Long, which were used by the king, the queen and the the royal family, and court officials. These artifacts not only possess exceptional artistic value but also provide deep insight into the refined courtly life of Vietnam’s feudal dynasties.

The visit to the Imperial Citadel of Thang Long by Their Majesties the King and Queen of the Belgians, together with the President and First Lady of Vietnam, stands as a powerful symbol of cultural exchange between the two countries. The presence of high-ranking leaders exploring Vietnam’s cultural heritage together demonstrates mutual respect and shared appreciation for the country’s history and traditions. Both King Philippe and Queen Mathilde have previously visited Vietnam in different positions, leaving behind lasting impressions and cherished memories. However, this marks their first official State visit—an especially meaningful return to a land they hold dear. This visit affirms Belgium’s strong commitment to its partnership with Vietnam, as well as the increasing role and standing of Vietnam within the Asia-Pacific region.

The joint visit to the Imperial Citadel of Thang Long by Their Majesties and the President and First Lady of Vietnam is a moment of diplomatic significance, reflecting mutual respect and growing ties between the two nations. It also serves as an opportunity to present Vietnam’s rich cultural heritage and proud history to the international community, while opening new avenues for cooperation and further strengthening the vibrant and enduring relationship between Vietnam and Belgium.
